777. DC Brau / Oskar Blues Smells Like Freedom

DC Brau Smells Like FreedomThis is the best beer in the box so far but I do have a few saisons left to drink. Smells Like Freedom is a collaboration between DC Brau and Oskar Blues (see link here for more detail).

Smells Like Freedom pours a radiant orange with a thick white head. Lots and lots of dank piney hops with a bit of tangerine and pineapple in both the nose and the taste. Carbonation and mouthfeel were both excellent. Finish has a nice bitterness and leaves an oily residue that lingered long after the beer was finished.

DC Brau and Oskar Blues set out to create a dank IPA and they did just that. If you have a way of getting this beer you should give it a try.
Pros:

Cons:
Alcohol Content: 7.0% ABV
IBU (Bitterness): 65
Rating:
Brewers Website: DC Brau
Brewers Description: Smells Like Freedom is a big, juicy hop-bomb of an IPA with a nice medium body that is slightly dried out thanks to the addition of sugar the brewing kettle. The hop profile is huge. Notes include resiny, piney, earthy, sticky, cannabis and white pepper with aromas of cannabis, tangerine and sugar-coated ruby red grapefruit to entice the drinker. Smells Like Freedom drinks with a subtle punch of bitterness upfront that fades into a pleasant, palate-coating bitterness that attractively lingers and asks for another sip. This one is sure to please beer geeks and IPA fans with many layers of flavor upon flavor.

592. DC Brau On the Wings of Armageddon

DC Brau OTWAAnother beer from the Virginia attorney and this one was a big improvement from the disappointing DuClaw Anti Venom. DC Brau is Washington DC’s first production brewery in  almost 60 years and sells their beer in cans and growlers. OTWOA is their double IPA brewed entirely with Falconers Flight hops.

OTWOA pours a deep orange with a fairly thick off white head. Aroma is sweet and full of hops. Some pine, grapefruit and a bit of floral. Overall appearance and aroma is what I expect from a DIPA. Taste did not disappoint either with loads of hops but still well balanced. I got a lot of pine at the start and then a nice sweetness. A fair amount of bitterness in the finish. Alcohol is well hidden when cold but as the beer warmed it started to come through a bit.

Overall a very nice canned DIPA and something worth trading for or seeking out if you are in the DC area.
Pros:
Well balance
Cons: Fairly bitter
Alcohol Content: 9.2% ABV
Calories: ???
IBU (Bitterness): ??

Brewers Website: DC Brau
Brewers Description: OTWOA is a single hop blend* beer utilizing Falconers Flight™. Brewed with just enough Pale malt, Cara-60, CaraPils and Malted wheat to carry the intense hop character onto the pallet.

At first glance, it has an orange hue in the glass with a viscus, rocky head that refuses to dissipate. Upon first sniff there are dominate aromas of citrus, white grapes and grapefruit with light bread and biscuit notes. After the first sip we taste a mellow bitterness that only grows as more is consumed. Moderately carbonated, deceptively smooth, refreshingly dry and extremely heady for a beer at 9.2% ABV.
