767. Stoneface Brewing Mozaccalypse

Stoneface MozaccalypseThis beer has been getting a lot of hype so I had a friend in New Hampshire track down a couple of bottles for me. If you have read my prior posts about Stoneface you know I have only been really impressed with their India Red Rye. Their IPA and first DIPA Hopulization were good but didn’t blow me away.

Mozaccalypse uses a combination of Mosaic and Azacca hops. I have reviewed a lot of beers lately with Mosaic hops but I do not see Azacca often so I have no idea what the flavor, aroma or bittering profile is. The appearance is a slightly hazy orange with a solid white head. Aroma is big but seems to be a hodge podge of citrus, floral, pine and onion, not really working for me.

Taste is similar to the nose starting with a pine resin followed by some perfume floral and a pretty significant bitterness. Overall it was a decent beer but it seemed the hops were competing instead of complimenting each other. Maybe it is just my palate but their beers seem to get more hype than they deserve as they do not even come close to offerings from; Hill Farmstead, Trillium, Tree House or even Maine Beer.

750. Stoneface Brewing Hopulization

Stoneface HopulizationThis is my third beer from Stoneface and I expected it to be better than it was. Their Red Rye still takes the top spot but I have heard good things about Mozaccalypse. Honestly not sure where this one went wrong as it is a solid beer. It may have been bad timing as I have been drinking a lot of Epiphany, Swish and Hill Farmstead beers lately and this one just doesn’t measure up.

Appearance is a very clear orange with a nice white head that left ample lacing on the glass. Aroma is nice with plenty of citrus and a nice amount of sweetness but falls short of those IPAs mentioned above. Taste follows with the same muted citrus and some pine, alcohol is well hidden making it a very easy beer to drink.

Overall this is a very good beer but if you are going to make a double IPA it better be great as there are so many choices out there.
Pros:
Cons:
Alcohol Content: 8.9% ABV
IBU (Bitterness): ??

Brewers Description: Hopulization is an irresponsible experiment of hop utilization. This Double IPA is built with 2-row pale, white wheat, and crystal malts – and then dry-hopped twice, using Galaxy, Calypso, and a touch of Simcoe hops. Twice. We did it two times.

648. Stoneface Brewing IPA

Stoneface IPAMy second beer from Stoneface Brewing and this is their straight up IPA. The first beer they brewed was meant to be an IPA but ended up a pale ale, they went back and tried it again and got a solid IPA.

Their IPA pours a deep hazy orange color with a bright white head. Aroma has lots of citrus, tropical hops. Taste does not live up to the aroma with a slightly more subdued hop flavor. Still a decent amount of hops here with some grapefruit and pine but not as potent as the aroma. Finish is clean and crisp with a very light bitterness.

Stoneface IPAOverall another quality beer but I enjoyed the India Red Rye Ale a bit more than the IPA.

647. Stoneface Brewing India Red Rye Ale

Stoneface Brewing India Red Rye IPAFinally made it down to Stoneface Brewing in Newington, thank you to Pete for letting me stop by for some beer. Impressive setup and quality beer. They had the pale ale, IPA and the India Red Rye Ale on so I grabbed a full growler of the IPA and a one liter of this one. Probably should have switched as I really enjoyed this beer.

What is India Red Rye Ale? Is it an amber/red, a rye or an IPA. Well it is probably all 3 with the coloring of a red, the hop profile of an IPA and the slight spicy/sweetness of a rye. Appearance is a typical red with a deep amber color and a nice white head. Aroma has lots of citrus hops, very nice. Taste follows but adds the spicy rye flavors and an added earthy hop profile to the citrus you get in the aroma.

Very nice beer from Stoneface brewing and if you have not stopped in to see them yet you should.

Complex but balanced
