608. Otter Creek Citra Mantra

Otter Creek Citra MantraTwo lagers in a row, that does not happen often. Citra Mantra is  part of the Brewmaster Mike series that brought up Double Dose and Kind Ryed two of my favorites from Otter Creek.

This is not your typical lager as it is extensively hopped using Citra and the light lager really allows those hops to shine. Appearance is a pale orange with a slight white head.  Aroma is full of citrus which shouldn’t come as a surprise from the Citra hops.

Taste is where this one really shines with a crisp lager base and plenty of grapefruit, grass and orange flavors. Finishes with a fair amount of bitterness which helps make this beer that much more drinkable. Overall an excellent beer and I look forward to more offerings from Otter Creek in the near future.

600. Otter Creek Hop Session Ale

Otter CreekThis beer should combine two of my favorite things; hops and a low ABV beer (session ale). Lots of breweries have jumped on the hoppy session beer lately including Founders All Day IPA, Lagunitas DayTime and more recently Stone’s Go To IPA (which I have not tried yet). Unlike these others Otter Creek decided to make theirs a pale and release it during the winter. Seems like a spring/summer would have been better timing for this beer.

Hop Session pours a nice orange color with a single finger white head. Aroma is mostly grassy hops and fairly mild. Taste was OK with slight citrus and floral flavors. Seemed a bit watered down which is not that uncommon for low ABV beers.

Hop Session Ale is an average beer that I enjoyed while drinking but would not seek out again,

556. Otter Creek Kind Ryed IPA

Otter Creek Kind RyedAfter tasting the collaboration beer – Double Dose IPA – I have been on the look out for more from Otter Creek. I missed this one in the stores but fortunately my mother-in-law found a six pack at a local store and purchased it. She bought it because she liked the label with the dog and the guy in the car not knowing that it was something I was looking for. Anyway I ended with a couple of bottles when we went up to her house to do some wood and roof her porch. She also brought over another six pack she found on another shopping trip so I drank this beer for an entire week, which is very unusual for me.

Kind Ryed is a rye IPA which is a style that I am really enjoying, unlike the black IPA. Color is a deep orange with a thin white head that left tons of lacing on the glass. Aroma has a significant amount of citrus, tangerine – similar to Double Dose but dialed back a notch or two but with an added sweetness from the rye. Taste is very similar to the nose with a solid amount of tangerine from the hops but plenty of rye as well. Overall this was a very enjoyable beer and one of my favorite rye IPAs.

Hoping this one becomes a regular in the Otter Creek line.

Nice mix of hops and rye

542. Otter Creek / Lawson’s Double Dose IPA

Otter Creek Lawsons Double DoseOne of the oldest (Otter Creek) and one of the smallest (Lawson’s Finest Liquids) recently collaborated to brew Double Dose IPA. This is a double IPA brewed at Otter Creek and sold in 4-packs of 12 ounce bottles.

Appearance is a very nice orange color with a thin white head. Aroma has tons of fresh hops; citrus and pine mostly. First taste made me think tangerine juice but it quickly turned into some resiny pine with only a hint of bitterness. This was a great beer and I am sorry I didn’t get more than a single 4-pack as I am sure all the local stores are sold out.
Pros:
Very flavorful and hoppy

Alcohol Content: 8.5% ABV

117. Otter Creek Black IPA

Found this one at my local convenience store while picking up pizza for the family. Had not tried anything from Otter Creek and the style of Black IPA is fairly new so thought i would give it a try. The beer pours a very dark (not quite black) color with a thick tan head. Very little aroma but there is a slight hop, pine smell. Taste is about what you would expect with an IPA although there is a bit of a roasted taste to it before the hops kick in. Hops linger longer than some of the other IPAs I have reviewed but overall this is a decent beer in a style that many brewers have tried yet.
Pros: Color, different
Cons: Hops linger a bit too long
Alcohol Content: 6.0% ABV
Calories: ???
IBU (Bitterness): 60
Rating: ★★½☆☆

Brewers Description: Dark in color and character, this unfiltered Black IPA exudes caramel and roasted notes while highlighting a bold hop bitterness and citrus aroma. Apollo, centennial and citra hops intermingle with the deep complexities provided by copious amounts of caramel malts and de-husked roasted barley.
