661. Hardywood Park Craft Brewery Capital Trail Pale Ale

Hardywood Craft Capital TrailMy second beer from Hardywood Park Craft Brewery and another beer from my box from Virginia. Unlike so many breweries that are canning Hardywood seems to use a very simple design on their cans. Contrasting colors and easy to read but no flashy designs like we see from Baxter Brewing, Bissell Brothers, The Alchemist and many others.

Capital Trail pours a cloudy copper color with a nice white head. Aroma is resiny pine and quite dank for a pale ale. Taste was more sweet than I expected with the hops taking a back seat.

A pleasant beer but nothing that stands out among a crowded field of quality pale ales.

594. Hardywood Park The Great Return

Hardywood The Great ReturnAnother new brewery for me, Hardywood Park Craft Brewery in Richmond, Virginia. The brewery has an interesting story which you can find on their website (link below). The Hardywood name comes from where the owners met and discovered craft beer in Australia.

The Great Return is their IPA and it comes in a nice looking 16 ounce can. Appearance is near perfect orange with a nice two finger off white head. Aroma has a nice mix of grapefruit and slightly dank hops. Taste is very hop forward with grapefruit, pine and only a very mild bitterness in the finish.

This is a great example of a solid single IPA and something that should be sought out if you visit the area or have a trading partner that can get their hands on it.
Pros:
Nice mix of tropical and pine hops
Cons:
Alcohol Content: 7.5% ABV
Calories: ???
IBU (Bitterness): 70

Brewers Description: Bold, resinous and bursting with bright grapefruit aroma, this IPA is a tribute to the decades of hard work by conservationists to restore the James River as a bounty of vibrant aquatic life, eco-friendly recreational activity, and in our case, fresh brewing water. These efforts have culminated recently with the symbolic return of the endangered Atlantic sturgeon, a prehistoric, yet majestic behemoth of a fish, spotted as far up the James River as the fall line in Richmond. Your purchase of this beer supports the James River Association. Thank you for being a part of The Great Return.

In our commitment to James River conservation, Hardywood will contribute $10 per barrel of The Great Return to The James River Association, to support their mission to be the guardian of the James River. The JRA’s core programs include Watershed Restoration, Education and Outreach, River Advocacy and the Riverkeeper Program.
