The Double/Imperial IPA category has some of my favorite beers including; Heady Topper, Hill Farmstead’s Ephraim, Maine Beer Company’s Lunch, Pliny the Elder and many many more. When I see one that I have not tried before I usually buy it hoping it will live up to those mentioned above. This one certainly was not one to add to my shortlist of favorites.
The beer looks promising with a deep amber color and thick off white head. Smell is not what I expect from an Imperial IPA but about what I expect from Shipyard. There was a lot of sweet malts and lots of butterscotch (typical of Shipyard) but very little in terms of hops. Taste is very much the same with a sticky sweetness that simply does not work in a big IPA.
Overall the beer was not terrible but I did not finish it due to the high ABV and sweetness.
Cons: Butterscotch sweet flavor
Alcohol Content: 9.25% ABV
IBU (Bitterness): 60
Brewers Website: Shipyard
