Bier Cellar – Portland, ME

001 (2)Bier Cellar in Portland is my favorite store. I am in there almost every week chatting with owner Greg about beer and what’s happening in the Portland beer scene. They have a great selection of beer, wine, mead and ciders. If you follow their Facebook page, Twitter account and join their email list you will know about all the great beer coming to Maine.

Bier Cellar offers mixed 6-pack discounts, a loyalty program and a beer of the month club in addition to regular tastings. Greg is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to beer and has tried almost if not everything in the store. Stop by and see them and tell Greg his insurance guy sent you.

The Vault – Lewiston, ME

The Vault was the first true craft beer store in Lewiston/Auburn. We had a couple of other beverage stores that carried some craft beer but you could not count on them keeping up with new releases and adding new distributors. Susan Hall started The Vault with a wine focus but quickly expanded to include a couple coolers of craft beer. Shortly after she hired Tom Ardia to be the craft beer guy at the store. They do tastings as often as the State will allow and will accommodate requests when they can.

The selection is smaller than some of the beer stores in Portland but I have never had a problem finding good beer. Also because Lewiston/Auburn’s beer scene is small they often have some of the beers that sell out quickly in Portland. If you are looking for something give them a call or send them an email, they respond quickly and are always willing to help.

Bangor Wine & Cheese – Bangor, ME

Bangor Wine and Cheese may not have beer in their name but they certainly have a good selection in the store. In addition to the beer they have wine, cheese (no surprise there) and also get fresh bread delivered a couple days a week. They also carry Artisan Olive Oils and Vinegars and some specialty meats.

The store is located in downtown Bangor but I have never had a problem finding on street parking. Check out their website for more details.

The Good Beer Store – Fryeburg, ME

The Good Beer Store has been open for almost two years and is one of my favorite places. They have a very good beer selection and because they are outside of the Portland marketplace they can keep things in the store longer. I recently found a 6-pack of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot on the shelf nearly a year after it was released. This can be a good thing when looking for certain types of beers. Stay away from the IPAs that have dust on them but barleywines and stouts will still be great.

The Good Beer Store also has a small selection of wine and recently added home brew supplies. They have tastings on a regular basis and offer home brew classes. The owners are very involved in the craft beer scene and can be found at most brew fests. They are great people that truly enjoy great beer. If you are in Western Maine or on your way to the North Conway NH area be sure to stop in and check out their store.

Owner’s Description: “Good Friends, Good Wine, Good Times” is proudly displayed on the wall of the newly opened Good Beer and Wine Store and that’s exactly how this little store came to fruition. Friends Bob and Teresa Prouty and Ruthie and Kevin Antonucci, all of the small western Maine town of Fryeburg which lies on the New Hampshire border nestled in the foothills of the White Mountains, have been spending the last 15 years enjoying good times together over a vast selection of craft beers, red wine and a little coffee brandy for Teresa.

About two years ago the friends found themselves frequenting a local restaurant and pub that boasts over 1000 bottles of beer many of which are impossible to find locally. On their quest to try them all they began throwing the idea around of opening their craft beer store, so they could take home their favorites, right here in Fryeburg. This remained a dream in both the couples lives until December of 2010. As any Mainer knows driving in snowy weather becomes second nature but never becomes enjoyable. So it was, on the couples third trip to Portland, a 2 hour round trip trek from Fryeburg all to find good beer they knew that their dream was destined to become a reality. The doors to the Good Beer and Wine Store officially opened to the public on April 2nd with the promise of more good times to come for the friends and all who enters its doors. So come in, become good friends and grab some good beer!

Top Shelf Brews – Hampton, NH

20130213_160043_HDRTop Shelf Brews is a recent find for me. I was searching for some Resonation Pale Ale from Great Rhythms Brewing and one of my Seacoast NH friends told me Top Shelf had it. I stopped by after visiting Blue Lobster Brewing (which is almost across the street) and grabbed 3 bottles.

Last week I made my second trip to Top Shelf to check out the 20130213_160229_HDRinventory and grab some beer that is not available in Maine. They have Oskar Blues, Firestone Walker and some of the smaller New Hampshire breweries like; Throwback and Candia Road. The day I was there they also had Barrel Aged Bigfoot from Sierra Nevada so I grabbed a bottle of this.

Top Shelf has tastings every Thursday and offers a Beer of the Month club. In the couple of interactions I have had with the owner Susan she has been very pleasant and knowledgeable. If you live in the Seacoast area or are from Maine and visiting the area be sure to stop by Top Shelf.

The Drinkery – Londonderry, NH

The Drinkery is located in the basement of Tupelo Music Hall in Londonderry, NH. The store is just off route 102 and only has a small sign outside the building. Your GPS will get you there but look for the big old white building and you will see a small sign outside for The Drinkery.

Inside you will find a wide variety of beer with a focus on local New Hampshire beer and they do have a nice selection of beer that we cannot get in Maine including Firestone Walker and some of the local New Hampshire only breweries like; Throwback, Candia Road and a much larger variety of White Birch than we see in Maine.

The owners are great people that really enjoy what they do. In addition to craft beer they have a nice selection of wine and some local jelly, popcorn, nuts and mustards. This store is certainly worth checking out if you are in Central New Hampshire.

Tully’s Beer & Wine – Wells, ME

TullysTully’s has been around longer than a lot of other beer stores opening in 1997. They have a good selection of craft beer and also carry non-craft beer, wine, mead, cigars and a nice selection of glassware and beer related t-shirts. The staff is knowledgeable and willing to help.

If you live or vacation in Southern Maine make Tully’s a stop for all your beer and wine needs.
