Fiddlehead started canning earlier this year using Iron Heart’s mobile canning unit. I missed their first two offerings; Hodad Porter and Second Fiddle DIPA. Mastermind is Fiddlehead’s third canned beer and the first that went into 12 ounce cans. I was able to find some 4-packs at Beverage Warehouse in Winooski a couple days after they were released from the brewery.
Mastermind pours a vibrant and unfiltered yellow with a nice white head. Aroma is loaded with citrus and tropical fruits. Taste follows with big juicy citrus flavors as well as some light earthy/flowery hops. Very mild bitterness, slightly dank and a very well hidden 8.1% ABV put Mastermind right in the middle of my sweet spot for DIPAs.
It is hard not to compare this to Heady Topper as it is a canned DIPA from Vermont. Fortunately it holds up well against Heady and may be easier to find, although that will almost certainly change as the word gets out. If you can find it get it and enjoy.
Pros: Loads of tropical/citrus in the aroma and taste
Cons: Would prefer a 16 oz can
Alcohol Content: 8.1% ABV
IBU (Bitterness): ??
Brewers Website: Fiddlehead Brewing
Brewers Description: BIG juicy aroma, smooth finish, brilliant color, aaaand 8.1% ABV.
