So much has happened in Portland in the past 12-18 months with many new breweries and countless bars and restaurants opening. Many of my favorite beers are being produced just 30 minutes from my home and I cannot wait to see where Rising Tide, Bissell Brothers, Foundation, Austin Street and all the others go in the next few years.
Austin Street is doing a little bit of everything on their small system producing some great pale ales and IPAs but also some amazing brett beers. I believe Jake’s beers will convert a lot of craft beer drinkers over to the wonderful complexity of wild yeast. When I picked up this growler of Catherine I tried their Brett Blonde and the Brett Weizen both excellent beers.
Catherine is Austin Street’s straight up Double IPA (no brett here). Pours a great orange color with a thick white head. The aroma is huge with lots of grapefruit and tropical notes. Taste follows with lots of flavorful hops but it also packs a lot of bitterness and slight alcohol burn. Overall this a very good beer that I expect will get even better in the coming months.
Pros: Great Aroma, solid flavor
Cons: Big on bitterness and alcohol present
Alcohol Content: 8.2% ABV
Brewers Website: Austin Street Brewery
Brewers Description: Catherine is a double IPA brewed with huge amounts of classic American hops along with a relative new comer. Dangerously drinkable at 8.2% and packed with hop flavor and aroma.
