Black IPAs are a tough style for me. I have only found a couple that I enjoyed and even those didn’t compare well with the regular and double IPAs. Fortunately on my last trip to Hill Farmstead they had Society & Solitude #2 on tap which is their imperial black IPA.
This beer was amazing pouring almost pitch black color with a thick tan head. Aroma has a lot of pine and fruity with only a hint of the roasted malts. The taste has an outstanding combination of pine, citrus and grapefruit hops with a nice roasted chocolate finish. This beer had a little bit of everything and it was extremely well balanced. At 9.5% ABV you might expect a little alcohol burn or flavor but there is none.
Another amazing beer from Hill Farmstead – I make almost monthly visits to the brewery so if you want to tag along shoot me a message and I will let you know when I am going again.
