If you have been reading my blog over the past 16 months you know that I have been searching for a really good red/amber ale. Seems that style is almost identical and very little aroma and simple taste. Well after a lot of amber/reds I finally found one worth drinking at Earth Eagle Brewings.
Maybe I am being a bit harsh by saying I found one worth drinking, really I have found one that stands out above the rest. I have a pretty good taste for beer but for the most part if you lined up 5 amber/reds I am not certain I would be able to tell one from the other, however if Red Ryder was one of the 5 I am confident I could as it has a very distinctive aroma and flavor.
This beer uses 30% rye malt which I think is the difference. It looks like a typical red/amber with a nice red color and thin white head. Aroma and taste is where this one stands out. Aroma is unlike any other red ale I have had with a very nice sweetness probably from the rye with a bit of fruity hops. Taste is very surprising again with a very nice sweet malt flavor with a nicely balance hop profile. This is different from most reds and when I was at the brewery and tasted all 6 of their offerings this was the stand out beer. This brewery is just across the border in New Hampshire so I would recommend you make the trip and check them out.
